Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, scene of the deadliest school shooting in US history, was evacuated today after a bomb threat was received, police said.

"All we know at this point is that there is a bomb threat and that the school has been evacuated," a Jefferson County Sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Jefferson County Sheriff's spokeswoman told the Denver ABC affiliate website thedenverchannel.com that the caller started making the threats around 9.30am (local time) and has called several times since then.

After the series of phone calls, the Sheriff's Office felt it was necessary to evacuate the school as a precaution, she said. The bomb squad was inside the school checking to make sure all is safe, thedenverchannel.com reported.
