THE IRISH Times was among the winners at the annual HSE Community Games media awards ceremony, which took place in Athlone on Saturday night. The award was presented to journalist Ronan McGreevy on behalf of the paper.
The Irish Timeswas also runner-up in the best coverage of the decade for a national newspaper. The overall award went to the Evening Echoin Cork.
The awards are given for coverage of the national finals, which take place over three weekends, one in May and the other two in August at the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT).
The Mayo Newswon the best overall coverage for a provincial newspaper last year, but its rival the Connaught Telegraphwon the award for the best overall regional newspaper for the decade.
HSE Community Games marketing manager Margaret Bolton said 90 per cent of Irish children had some involvement with the Community Games and it was important that the media reflected that fact in its coverage of the event.
