A train full of Christmas passengers was left stranded in Co Tipperary tonight after hitting debris on a track.

A train full of Christmas passengers was left stranded in Co Tipperary tonight after hitting debris on a track.

The Dublin-bound train, travelling from Cork, was damaged after a lorry hit the rail bridge as it travelled underneath it.

Engineers are currently working at the scene to try to repair the train and move it to a nearby station where passengers will be transferred to another service.

The incident happened at around 5pm just 300 metres outside Templemore train station, near Thurles. The train, which left Cork at 3.30pm, was due to arrive in Heuston Station at 6.35pm.

Iarnród Éireann staff said the delay is indefinite.

"A lorry hit the bridge near Templemore, debris fell onto the track as the train approached it and it ran over the debris," said a spokesman. "The undercarriage of the train is damaged and engineers are working on the train at the moment."
