A Joint Oireachtas Committee has recommended that taxpayers be compensated when the Revenue Commissioners miscalculate their tax liability.
This is just one of fifteen recommendations by the all-party committee in its report on the efficiency and quality of customer service in Revenue.
Speaking on RTÉ radio this morning committee chairman Mr Dick Roche TD said: "If a compliant taxpayer suffers he should be recompensed".
Mr Roche said: "It can happen that in very extreme cases a compliant taxpayer can suffer greatly and where that does happen somebody says sorry and walks away from it."
"This is simply not adequate", he said.
Mr Roche said a system to deal with mistakes can be implemented by simply reversing the process whereby Revenue can collect funds to a situation where Revenue is paying out funds.
The Committee also recommended the setting up a National Forms Agency, a review of the Revenue's complaints handling system and monitoring telephone response times.
