Intense negotiations are under way this evening at the UN World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa, on a Norwegian compromise on language on Israel's treatment of Palestinians according to sources close to the talks.

"Negotiations are going on. Norway presented a first draft which was not suitable and is working now on modifications, along with other western representatives," a Palestinian source close to the discussions said.

"We don't want this conference to fail," the source added.

A source close to the US delegation confirmed that Norway had presented a document, saying the US team would not countenance any changes to it.
