The aid agency Concern, which has allocated £500,000 to emergency work in Ethiopia, yesterday opened an appeal for famine relief with a target of £3 million.

Concern's chief executive, Mr David Begg, said currently the lives of eight million people in Ethiopia were threatened by a severe shortage of food resulting from three years of low rainfall and drought.
