Directory services firm Conduit, based in Dublin said it welcomed efforts by CMT, the Spanish telecommunications regulator, to introduce competition in directory information services in Spain.

Conduit said it has held a number of discussions with government and regulatory authorities in Spain over the past year, and firmly supports the view that full deregulation of directory services is in the best interests of Spanish consumers and Spain's economy generally.

Conduit confirmed it is already in discussions with a number of parties in Spain with a view to launching a competitive national directory service, and may consider locating an international call center in Spain to serve other markets, which could lead to the creation of hundreds of new jobs.

However, the company's decision to invest in Spain will depend on a full deregulation by the regulator, which creates fair conditions for new entrants, the company said.
