Members of parliament in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday unanimously passed a motion approving Mr Joseph Kabila as the new president to replace his slain father.

"We consider this day Major General Joseph Kabila is invested with all constitutional powers," said the motion which the 300-member body approved.

The 31-year-old Mr Kabila was chosen by the government to replace former President Laurent Kabila, who died last week after he was shot by one of his bodyguards.

The swearing-in ceremony is to be held tomorow, a day later than planned.
