Algiers - South Africa and Nigeria offered yesterday to contribute peacekeepers to the UN force planned for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), creating the necessary momentum for deployment, the Organisation of African Unity said after a six-country summit here.
"The momentum has been created for the speedy deployment of a force," the OAU secretary-general said after six African leaders met to evaluate the peace process in the DRC, where conflict has threatened to destabilise the entire central African region.
