Wimbledon and Republic of Ireland striker David Connolly is poised to join West Ham having been targetted for sometime by Hammers boss Glenn Roeder.

It will be Roeder's first signing since West Ham were relegated from the Premiership.Roeder gave Connolly his start at the age of 16 when manager of Watford and is keen to add the now 26-year-old to a squad weakened by summer departures.

He told the club's official website, www.whufc.com: "I identified David Connolly a month ago as a potential target that will bring firepower and goals to the team.

"In 28 starts last year he scored 24 goals which tells its own story. I know the lad, and in fact I know the man, though when I gave him his debut at 16 he was only a very young man.

"His ratio of goals to games is extremely high and he is the sort of character I would want to bring to the club. He is fiery and strong mentally - a tough boy and he lives for scoring goals.

"I am really pleased to have secured his services, subject to a medical of course, and hopefully he is the first of many.

Roeder also hopes to agree a one-year contract later this week with former Newcastle and England midfielder Rob Lee, who has been on trial.
