The Irish Echonewspaper has secured a "significant" investment for an undisclosed sum from a consortium led by former GAA president and current TG4 chairman Peter Quinn.

The Irish-American consortium also includes the Belfast Media Group (formerly the Andersonstown News Group), which is taking a minority stake in the consortium.

The Irish Echo, which has a weekly circulation of 20,000, was first published in 1928 and is the oldest continuously published Irish-American weekly newspaper, and the oldest English-language newspaper in New York.

Dublin businessman Seán Finlay, who bought the newspaper from the Grimes family in New York for $2.2 million (€2.44 million) in 2002, will retain a significant stake and a place on the Irish Echo's board.

Commenting on the deal, Mr Quinn said: "The Irish Echohas always been at the heart of Irish America. Today, the relationship between the United States and Ireland is stronger than ever."

"As well as the deep family and cultural ties that bind the two nations, there are many new and vibrant business relationships developing. I look forward to our newspaper expanding with these exciting and changing times," he added.
