Cairo - Many Egyptians are convinced that what has elsewhere been portrayed as a tragic culmination of paparazzi excess was in fact a meticulously planned murder, writes Siona Jenkins.
The Egyptian press has put forward conspiracy theories based on the perception that Princess Diana's affair with Dodi al-Fayed, an Arab and a Muslim, was just too much for the royal family and the British establishment in general to swallow. "They killed her" declared a banner headline in the independent weekly al-Dustour on Wednesday. Proof of this included a mysterious car apparently seen driving in front of Princess Diana and Dodi's Mercedes just before the accident, the alleged two hour delay in taking Diana to the hospital and the "falsified" reports that the driver of the Mercedes was drunk, implying that the French police were also involved in the cover-up.
