Consultation on the introduction of a charities regulator is to begin before the end of the year, the Minister of State for Justice has said.
Kathleen Lynch said views would be invited from the public on the operation of a Charities Regulatory Authority as outlined in the Charities Act 2009.
The Act aimed to regulate charities and increase transparency and accountability. However, substantive provisions were not implemented amid concerns about the costs of setting up a regulator.
Ms Lynch said the Act aimed to foster public trust and confidence in charities. It remained the Government's intention to implement it "as resources permit", she said.
