Thumbs up: There are more than 50 million unwanted coat hangers hanging in Irish homes, of which more than 10 million end up in landfill every year, according to Marks & Spencer.

In the Dublin area alone, 91 tons of hangers are sent to landfill every year. The average Irish home has 67 coat hangers with almost a fifth being unused.

M&S currently reuses or recycles all of its plastic hangers that are not taken home by customers and over the past 15 years has recycled more than a billion of the things.

From Thursday until Saturday, the Liffey Valley M&S is holding a hanger amnesty - just bring in your unused hangers, of all varieties and from any shop, and they will be recycled. A perfect opportunity to declutter that wardrobe.

Dining out going up

Thumbs down:London is now the world's most expensive city for dining out, having overtaken Tokyo and Paris in the past year, according to Zagat restaurant guides.

The average cost of a three-course restaurant meal for one is up 2.9 per cent on last year to €57.13 including one drink, tax and service.

Tokyo - which was most expensive last year - is now in third place at €51.30, according to the survey. Paris has leapfrogged the Japanese capital and is now the second most expensive capital city at €51.69.
