Thumbs down:There was a setback last week for those who believe increased competition in the postal sector will bring about an improved service, after the European Parliament voted to delay by two years its plan to open European Union postal markets to full competition.
If the vote receives the support of the European Commission, the end of state postal service monopolies delivering letters of up to 50g will not come about until 2011 at the earliest. Postal workers say the measure, even if delayed, will lead to job losses and a poorer quality service in rural areas.
Laois loves stationery
Thumbs up:Folk from Co Laois spend more on online auction site eBay than people from any other county, a survey has found. Office supplies are strangely popular in the county and, according to eBay Ireland , stationery is five times more popular with people from Laois than with Dublin people. There was no indication from eBay as to why Laois people have developed such a love for and pens and post-its, although the comparative lack of supply shops across the county may have something to do with it. Carlow finished in second place while Wicklow was third. People in Carlow spend more on the home and collectibles categories, while Wicklow natives are keen on art and photography.
