Going soft on salt: Our love of salt means reducing our intake to the target set by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland is now unlikely to be met.
The FSAI initiated a national salt reduction policy in 2004 aimed at reducing average daily salt intake by adults to 6g (one teaspoon) in two years. However, projections suggest that by 2010, salt intake from processed food alone will be around 7g per day in the average diet. This does not take into account salt from home cooking or adding it at the table.
