ME and MY MONEY:David McSavage, Comedian
Are you a saver or a spender?
I’m a saver and a spender. The harder you work and the more brilliant you are, the more saving and spending you can do. Ultimately, everyone’s biggest fear is being old and having no money, sitting in an institutional old people’s home, with gravy dribbling down your face, waiting to die under the supervision of some evil carer. All the people who saved, meanwhile, will be cared for properly. That question has the smell of middle class fear mongering.
Do you shop around for better value?
I’m like a serial killer. I covet the thing I’m going to buy for a few weeks, I go back again, and again, and think, you’re going to be mine, and then when I finally get used to the idea with parting with so much cash, I buy the thing, feel good for an hour, and then the dreadful emptiness comes back.
What has been your most extravagant purchase ever and how much did it cost?
I bought a house in Ailesbury Road for 40 million. Oooops.
What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?
My Guild guitar; solidly built, beautiful sound, she’s always there for me.
Have you ever crossed the Border to shop?
No.
Do you haggle over prices?
I generally try to haggle, even though some shop owners don’t like it. I think they respect you more if you do.
Has the recession changed your spending habits?
Stop going on about the recession! There’s no recession! In my head I see solutions and possibilities. Yes we can!
Do you invest in shares?
Yeah, I’m the Warren Buffet of Ireland. Actually, no I don’t, I haven’t a clue.
Cash or card?
Cash.
What was the last thing you bought, and was it good value for money?
Wild rocket in Fallon Byrne. Delicious, so healthy, sooo middle class.
Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?
I saved up to buy a Citroën Méhari back in the 1980s. It cost £2,000. Not a very practical car, but sure what of it?
Have you ever lost money?
Yes, great craic! Once I set a pound note alight, and it made my brother cry.
Are you a gambler and, if so, have you ever had a big win?
I tried blackjack a few times, but I copped on fairly quick.
Is money important to you?
I am money.
How much money do you have on you now?
€73.
