A student (20) from Limerick who was attacked in Cork city early yesterday morning is still in a critical condition in hospital this morning.
The Cork Institute of Technology student sustained severe head injuries when he was attacked in a laneway off Grand Parade in Cork at around 1 a.m. yesterday.
He was taken to Cork University Hospital where today his condition has stabilised.
It is understood a number of people were involved in the attack, which broke out on South Main Street, continued through Kifts Lane and out onto the Grand Parade.
A Garda forensic team has examined the scene of the incident, and a major investigation headed by Supt Kieran McGann of Angleasea Street has begun.
This is the second serious assault to occur in Cork city in the past three weeks. Mr Christian Scully (28) remains on a life-support machine after being attacked on the Grand Parade last month.
