Mrs Anne Kelly (34) who has been on hunger strike in Cork since Tuesday, said last night she would continue her fast until the Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey, agreed to meet her. Mrs Kelly is spokeswoman for the Little Island Community Association, which is lobbying for a reversal of the decision to locate a massive sewage treatment plant at Carrigrenan on the island.
The site was selected as the most appropriate for the plant, which would deal with all Cork sewage and bring the city in line with EU directives concerning environmental protection. Mrs Kelly and her association have long fought to persuade the authorities there are better options than the Carrigrenan site. But Mr Dempsey refused to meet Mrs Kelly and her delegation when he visited the Cork County Hall recently.
