Mr Liam Cosgrave (FG) strongly advocated that the opinion of the National Roads Authority be sought on a proposal that he feared could spell the death knell of horse racing at Leopardstown. A recommended route for the South Eastern Motorway would cut through the straight six-furlong track on the course, he said. The effect of such works would cause many problems. Leopardstown, like the Curragh, was a showcase for Irish horse-racing, and he would urge the Minister for the Environment to obtain the opinion of the authority before making a decision on the suggested route.
