Australian Treasurer Mr Peter Costello said today next week's gross domestic product data for the quarter ended in June will show the economy was in good shape in a difficult environment.
"We will get the June quarter next week which will show that the Australian economy is well-placed, but it is well-placed in a world environment which is considerably weakened," he told reporters on the sidelines of an APEC finance ministers meeting.
Mr Costello declined to give a specific forecast. Analysts are forecasting 0.8 per cent growth for the three months ended in June, against a 1.1 per cent rise in the first quarter.
"We have good export growth in the June quarter and our domestic economy has probably strengthened," he said. "We've had good retail, we've had good housing construction. They will be positive for the national accounts but I'm not making any predictions."
