The Scot, second in the championship and hoping to break a career habit and win two grands prix in a row for the first time, set a fastest lap of one minute 26.440 seconds on a cold but bright Easter morning at Imola.

Ferrari fans, shocked to see world champion Michael Schumacher qualify only fourth in the team's backyard on Saturday, watched the German go around sixth fastest.

Brazilian team mate Rubens Barrichello was fifth in a session that means little in race terms.

Schumacher's younger brother, Ralf, and former champion Mika Hakkinen both went wide into the gravel trap during the session as did both the Prosts. The Minardi of young Spaniard Fernando Alonso pulled over after four laps.
