After pressure from national groups and some of its own members, Clare County Council has modified proposals seeking to ban "outsiders" from building homes in a large number of rural areas. Last week, the council proposed that "non-indigenous persons" would not be allowed to build homes in areas which are under development pressure or considered "visually vulnerable".
After opposition from An Taisce, Rural Resettlement Ireland and a number of council members, a revised document and map was produced at a special meeting at the weekend.
The council is now proposing that non-indigenous persons are "generally" not permitted to build homes in rural areas under high development pressure or in vulnerable landscapes such as Kilkee, Lahinch and Doolin.
