Councillors have threatened to end tonight's Dublin City Council meeting if Lord Mayor Royston Brady does not make a "fulsome apology" for calling his colleagues as "clowns" and a "waste of space".
In his comments, reported in the Sunday Timeslast month, Mr Brady added that his colleagues were "so pathetic" that "nobody in their right mind would listen to the crap that goes on in there".
The mayor has since withdrawn personal comments directed at Cllr Kevin Humphreys whom he referred to as "an absolute clown," but angered council colleagues by not attending the last meeting to explain himself.
The mayor's remarks have "urinated on a public institution that is 250 years old", according to Fine Gael Cllr Gerry Breen.
"He needs to recognise the seriousness of what he has done. He has insulted the council to the media and to the public. I fully expect him to take the initiative and apologise," added Cllr Breen in the The Irish Times.
Cllr Brady hinted last month he does not intend to apologise to the entire council for the insults.
