The chairman of the tribunal into allegations of sex abuse of young swimmers will go to court today seeking to have an injunction against him set aside.
An ex parte injunction was obtained against Dr Roderick Murphy SC, restraining him from completing the report.
If he is successful in having the injunction lifted, Dr Murphy is expected to present the report to the Minister very quickly. He will then show it to the Attorney General in order to get his advice on whether it can all be published. It will also be shown to the victims who gave evidence.
In the Dail yesterday the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Dr McDaid, stressed that he had always said he intended to make the findings of the report public. He would have to await the receipt of the report before deciding whether it could all be published.
"Dr Murphy has been working very diligently to get the report published, he said, adding that it ran to 1,300 or 1,400 pages. "I intend to publish as much of it as possible, taking into account the sensibilities of the people involved, the victims."
Referring to the injunction, he said: "That in itself indicates the type of report that is being prepared." He said the injunction had been brought by "a particular person in a particular organisation." The person is understood to be an official of a swimming club.
