THE days of greyhound racing in Belfast could he numbered as eviction proceedings have been started against the company which runs Dunmore Park, the only track in the city. Dunmore's owner, OD Cars Ltd, is seeking possession of the premises and claiming damages.

Greyhound racing has gone on at Dunmore since 1928 and the electric hare system was invented at the track. The High Court action is being fought by the United Greyhound Association Ltd, which has sub let the racing at Dunmore to Belfast Sporting and Leisure Ltd.

The Dunmore site at Alexandra Park Avenue, off the Antrim Road, covers 10 acres and would be worth millions if planning permission could be obtained for commercial development.

Racing takes place three nights a week. Yesterday, a leading figure in the greyhound industry said it would be a shame if racing was now to disappear from the city after all the hard times the industry had come through.
