Her boyfriend, school caretaker Mr Ian Huntley (28) was charged with the murders of the two 10-year-old girls yesterday. He was not in court for the hearing today.

Mr Huntley was sectioned under the Mental Health Act 1983 and moved to Rampton high security mental hospital in Nottinghamshire having been deemed unfit to appear before magistrates.

Cambridgeshire Police said following an assessment of Huntley’s condition, he would appear in court "when he is deemed fit to attend".

Mr Huntley was charged at about 5 p.m. by two Cambridgeshire detectives who drove to Rampton.

Psychiatrists have up to 28 days to assess Mr Huntley but can apply for further extensions up to six months or more. A spokesman for Rampton hospital said its patient would remain "for an undetermined stay".

The doctors will assess whether Mr Huntley is fit to stand trial or enter a plea. It is still possible that a patient deemed to need mental health care could stand trial for murder, a Cambridgeshire police spokesman said.
