Sixteen convictions had been recorded against John Gilligan prior to his convictions yesterday at the Special Criminal Court.
These included convictions for larceny, attempted robbery, burglary, road traffic offences, assault and receiving stolen property.
Gilligan's previous convictions, which dated back to 1967, were outlined to the court by Assistant Garda Commissioner Tony Hickey before Mr Justice O'Donovan handed down a 28year sentence.
They included:
3/7/67 - Given the Probation Act at Rathfarnham District Court on a charge of larceny.
9/10/74 - Given a six-month suspended sentence on a larceny charge at Dublin Metropolitan District Court.
19/7/77 - Sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment at Dublin District Court for receiving stolen goods.

10/4/84 - Fined £52 at Dublin Metropolitan District Court for dangerous driving and not having a driving licence.
20/6/84 - Sentenced to six months' imprisonment at Dublin Circuit Court. Assistant Commissioner Hickey said the charge in this case was not stated.
23/7/84 - Sentenced to five months in Mountjoy at Dublin Metropolitan District Court for not having motor insurance.
13/5/88 - Sentenced to 18 months in Mountjoy at the Central Criminal Court on burglary charges.
29/7/88 - Sentenced to four months' imprisonment at Dublin Metropolitan District Court for larceny.
8/4/90 - Appeared at Dublin District Court on a larceny charge and this was taken into consideration when at the Central Criminal Court on 7/11/90 he was convicted and sentenced to four months' imprisonment in Portlaoise Prison for receiving stolen property.
5/2/93 - Sentenced to six months' imprisonment at Portlaoise District Court for assaulting a prison officer. He was then transferred to Cork Prison and later returned to Portlaoise Prison, from which he was released in November 1993.
Assistant Commissioner Hickey said Gilligan was born on March 29th 1952 and was originally from Ballyfermot, Dublin. His wife, Ms Geraldine Dunne, was also from Ballyfermot. They had two adult children living away from home.
He said Gilligan lived at Corduff Avenue, Blanchardstown, Dublin, and at the Jessbrook Equestrian Centre, Mucklon, Enfield, Co Kildare. He was residing at the Kildare address when the charges for which he was before the court were preferred.
Defence counsel Mr Michael O'Higgins SC later pointed out that Gilligan had separated from his wife in 1994.
He also disputed some of the previous convictions which were listed. He said his instructions were that one of the road traffic offences listed had been duplicated and that an assault charge listed by the Assistant Commissioner referred to Gilligan's brother.
