At Limerick District Court, Detective Sargeant Padraic Byrnes gave evidence of arresting Mary Lynch at Cecil Street in Limerick city at 7.20pm on Sunday.

The 41-year-old was brought to Henry Street Garda station where she was formally charged. The court heard she replied “not guilty” to the charge.

Judge Marian O’Leary agreed to remand the accused in custody until Tuesday when she is due to appear before the same court again via video link.

Solicitor John Devane was assigned to represent Ms Lynch, who was granted free legal aid.

Mr Devane said he would be making an application for bail in the High Court next Monday.

He told the court his client is unwell and asked she receive all the appropriate medical and psychiatric assistance while in custody as she is on a strong course of medication.

Mr Devane told the court the alleged office occurred over 14 months ago and said his client had previously been questioned about the incident. He asked that that matters be dealt with as expeditiously as possible.

Sargeant Donal Cronin said the State was seeking two weeks for preparation of the Book of Evidence.
