Eight people have been released from custody after being charged in relation to "boy racer" events in Co Clare.

Seven males and one female, all in their teens or early 20s, were arrested yesterday, charged and released on bail and are to appear before Ennis District Court on April 23rd next.

An operation targeting organised events in Co Clare involving driving modified cars in public areas at night had been mounted by gardaí.

One such event had been organised in the north Clare area on the night of March 7th last, starting from the promenade at Lahinch with about 70 vehicles present.

The group made their way to the Cliffs of Moher, continuing on to Doolin and on to Corkscrew Hill in Ballyvaughan, where the main event occurred.

As a result of intelligence gathered by gardaí that night, searches were carried out yesterday morning at two houses in Co Clare. The eight arrests were also made in various locations in the county.

The eight were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Kilrush, Ennistymon, Ennis and Shannon Garda stations.
