A drink-driver who severed a pedestrian’s leg when he mounted a footpath at speed while almost five times over the legal limit has been jailed for five years and disqualified from driving for 20 years.
Marius Strelciunas (31) appeared before Galway Circuit Criminal Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to driving dangerously including speeding and in a manner that caused serious bodily harm to student Alex Dainty (22), at Barna Road, Knocknacarra, Galway, on December 23rd, 2012.
Strelciunas, a Lithuanian national with an address at Manor Court, Knocknacarra, also pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated.
Mr Dainty’s right leg was severed in the collision but doctors later had to amputate his left leg. One leg was amputated above the knee and the other below the knee.
