Results of post mortem to determine nature of inquiry

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 6-month-old baby girl at her home in Dublin this morning.

The child died at the family home on Sherard Avenue in the north inner city.

The alarm was raised at around 7.30am by the child’s mother, who was in the house at the time. When paramedics arrived at the house the infant was removed to Temple St Hospital.

A post mortem examination is due to take place at the hospital tomorrow and it is only after the results become available that the direction of the Garda investigation will become clear.

The child was in the house with her mother and three other siblings when she died.

Garda sources said while the exact cause of death would not become known until the post mortem examination.

Gardai at Mountjoy Garda station are investigating.
