A European arrest warrant has been issued for a convicted sex offender who travelled to Ireland from the UK earlier this year.
Gardaí in Limerick have appealed for information in their bid to locate Mian Mujahid Ali Shahid, a 19-year-old Pakistani national, who was convicted in the UK on two counts of sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman.
Shahid was last seen in Foynes, Co Limerick on August 11th. Gardaí are appealing to the driver of a car in which Shahid was a passenger to contact them.
Shahid was convicted in his absence at Stafford Crown Court on April 13th last on two counts of sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman after which time UK police issued a warrant for his arrest.
A week later he was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment for the offence, also in his absence.
A spokesman for the Garda press office said gardaí in Limerick had carried out extensive enquires but had failed to establish his current whereabouts.
“Our enquiries would indicate that he is still in this jurisdiction,” the spokesman said.
Gardaí believe the 19-year-old travelled to Ireland from Scotland earlier this year.
Shahid is subject to the reporting provisions of the Sex Offenders Act 2001 in Ireland.
Anyone with information on the movements of the individual is asked to contact Henry Street Garda station on 061 212400 or the Garda confidential line 1800 666 111.
