Vote sees 10 new members on Bar Council
Polling in the Bar Council elections took place last Friday, and the following were elected: David Barniville SC, Mel Christle SC, Declan Doyle SC, Mary Rose Gearty SC and Shane Murphy SC, to the senior panel; and Helen Boyle BL, Sharon Brookes BL, Fergal Foley BL, Roderick Maguire BL and Gerard Meehan BL to the junior panel.
Nineteen people sought the 10 available places on the council, which replaces half of its 20 members each year, with each member elected for a two-year term. The new Bar Council will then elect a chairman or chairwoman from among its members to replace Michael Collins SC, who has served for the past two years. A date has not yet been set for this election, and candidates have not yet formally declared.
Those seeking a place on the senior counsel panel were David Barniville, Mel Christle, Declan Doyle, Mary Rose Gearty, Richard N Kean, Deirdre Murphy, Shane Murphy and Timothy O’Leary.
Those seeking places on the junior counsel panel were Helen Boyle, Sharon Brooks, Martin Canny, Ronan Cosgrove, Fergal Foley, Mark Harty, Peter Leonard, Roderick Maguire, Gerard Meehan, Sophia Purcell and Andrew Whelan.
Bloomsbury takes over First Law list
Bloomsbury Professional Ltd has agreed to acquire the complete list of law titles from First Law Ltd.
A number of well-known titles, such as Butler, Keane on Local Government; Pierse, Road Traffic Law; Stewart, Arbitration Law; and Cassidy, Practitioners’ Concise Guide to Liquor Licensing, are included in the sale.
First Law has just published a new Law Report series containing Appeal Commissioners’ Decisions.
The Appeal Commissioners are responsible for carrying out statutory duties assigned under the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 and related legislation, mainly the hearing of appeals by taxpayers against decisions of the Revenue Commissioners about taxes and duties. The reports cost €350 for three issues a year.
NUIG students get postgrad funding
Four students from NUI Galway’s school of law were among the recipients of the €8.5 million recently awarded to Ireland’s top scholars and fellows by the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences.
Aisling De Paor, Tuam, Co Galway; Connie Healy, Salthill, Galway; Daragh Murray, Carpenterstown, Co Dublin, and Ciara Staunton, Ballybane, Galway, were each awarded a postgraduate scholarship following their applications. This was a success rate of 30 per cent.
Lecture on financial services oversight
A lecture, Financial Services Supervision in the EU after the Financial Crisis: the Proposed Role of the European Securities Markets Authority, by Prof Reyes Palá, of Zaragoza university, a former deputy director of the Spanish Securities Exchange Commission, will take place on Thursday at 6pm in the school of law, Trinity College.
