Two new books

Landlord and Tenant Law: the residential sector, by Una Cassidy and Jennifer Ring, will be launched next Thursday, October 14th by Ms Justice Mary Laffoy in the King's Inns at 6pm. Another new book, Housing authority lawby Neil Maddox, is also about to be published. Both are published by Thomson Reuters.

Law challenge launched

The second annual McCann Fitzgerald business law challenge, the Advocate, was launched last month with a €3,500 prize fund and an internship with McCann Fitzgerald for the overall winner.

Co-sponsored by the Courts Service and the Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service, the competition is open to all third-level law and business/law students on the island of Ireland. Entrants will be given a case study and asked to submit a YouTube video overview of their argument. A series of heats will be held at court locations throughout the country before finalists compete at the Grand Final, to be held in March 2011 at the Four Courts. Bar Council Archive Exhibition

The Bar Council archive of photographs will be open for viewing to the public from October 18th-22nd from 10am until 1pm daily. Please call to reception in the Law Library Distillery Building, 145 Church St, for admission.

Discrimination law seminar

Eilis Barry BL, former head of the legal section of the Equality Authority, will give a seminar on “Discrimination on the grounds of age or disability: recent case law”, to the Irish Women Lawyers Association on Thursday, October 14th in the Law Society seminar rooms at 6.15pm.

ISEL competition law forum

The next Competition Law Forum organised by the Irish Society for European Law is on Thursday, October 14th, in Hayes Solicitors, Lavery House, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2 at 6.30pm.

Dr Adinda Sinnaeve of the European Commission, Conor Quigley QC, Brick Court Chambers and Noel Travers BL will speak on The review of State aid rules on services of general economic interest, and the lecture will be chaired by John Handoll, partner in William Fry Solicitors.
