New master's modules in law at NUI Galway
Two modules have been added to NUIG’s LLM in public law, which has been offered by NUIG since 2005.
The module on Advocacy, Activism and the Public Interest will be modulated by Donncha O’Connell, the first full-time director of the ICCL and board member of the London-based NGO Interrights.
The module on Contemporary issues in Law and Society will be co-ordinated by programme director Marie McGonagle.

Journal on review of employment law
A new journal,
Employment Law Review - Ireland
, edited by barristers Dr Des Ryan and Dr Neville Cox, has been launched and will be published four times a year.
Its first issue contains articles on agency workers, the National Employment Rights Authority, recent developments in employment law and practice and procedure. There will be an index with issue four.

Separation of justice directorate
The European Commission’s Directorate- General for Justice, Freedom and Security will be split in two from July 2nd, with a new directorate general for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship. This corresponds to the portfolio of the new Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Viviane Reding, whose role is separate from that of the Commissioner for Home Affairs.
This has been welcomed by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe, which represents about a million European lawyers.
Pella medal
NUI Galway’s Prof William Schabas has been awarded the Vaspasian V Pella medal for international criminal justice by the Association Internationale de Droit Penal.
The award, which is named after the Romanian jurist who drafted the first statute of an international criminal court, is given by the association to a single individual once every 10 years.
Prof Schabas has held the chair in human rights law at NUI Galway since 2000.
