There is “insufficient evidence” to prosecute for the 2009 murder of a Rathfarnham mechanic, the Dublin coroner heard.

Liam Murray (42) had been dead for a number of days when his body was found at his cottage on the Cruagh Road in Edmondstown, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16 on the morning of March 20, 2009.

He had been shot in the head and upper body. Mr Murray was last seen alive while socialising with friends in Dublin city centre on St Patrick’s Day, three days earlier.

His murder has been the subject of a number of appeals and a €10,000 reward was offered by Crimestoppers for information that would help gardaí to solve the case. Two men were arrested and later released in relation to the murder in July 2011.

At Dublin Coroner’s Court, Detective Inspector George McGeary of Terenure Garda Station said that following the investigation a file was submitted to the director of public prosecutions. However, the DPP has now directed that there is “insufficient evidence to sustain a prosecution in the case”, he said.

Coroner Dr Brian Farrell adjourned the inquest for a full hearing on January 15, next year.
