An Irish woman was yesterday arrested on the Spanish island of Ibiza on suspicion of drugs offences.
The Department of Foreign Affairs last night confirmed they were providing consular assistance to the Irish woman who has been detained by Spanish police on the island.
The woman was arrested along with another woman who is understood to be a British national.
The Department has also been in contact with the woman’s family and are providing consular assistance to them also.
It was unclear last night whether the charges the woman is facing are low level possession charges or the more serious charge of intent to supply.
Ibiza is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, about 49 miles off the coast of the city of Valencia in eastern Spain. It is typically frequented by droves of young people and is known as a party resort.
The arrests come against the backdrop of two women in custody in Peru charged trying to smuggle cocaine worth €1.7 million out of the country.
