A man appeared in court yesterday on charges in connection with the deaths of two children in a road collision in Co Galway last year.

John O’Connor, in his 40s, from Tullinadaly Road, Tuam, is charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of two-year-old Kate Gilmore and her baby sister, Grace (three months) on the Dublin Road outside Tuam last October 21st.

He is also charged with dangerous driving at another location earlier on the same day, with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and with failing to make a required declaration on his driving licence application. The accused man appeared at a scheduled sitting of Tuam District Court, having been remanded on bail at an initial special sitting of the court last week.

On that occasion evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Garda Noelle Kilduff. Garda Kilduff told the court that she had arrested John O’Connor after meeting him by arrangement at Tuam Garda station. In court yesterday, Inspector Michael O’Dwyer applied to have John O’Connor remanded on continuing bail. Judge Geoffrey Browne remanded him to appear again in Tuam on May 28th.
