A postmortem is due to take place today on the body of a new-born baby discovered in Cork city yesterday afternoon.
Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the infant. Gardaí were alerted after the emergency services were called to a house in the Friar’s Walk area on the south side of the city at about 4.30pm.
The new-born baby boy was pronounced dead at the scene and his remains were removed to Cork University Hospital .
It is understood that the infant’s mother — an Irish woman — was also removed by ambulance to hospital where she is continuing to receive medical treatment.
Gardaí say the postmortem by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster will determine the course that their investigation will take.
Gardaí have preserved the scene at the house where the baby’s body was found as a precautionary measure pending the outcome of the post-mortem.
