A Belfast woman has appeared in court accused of inflicting a stab-like wound to her ex-partner’s throat.
Belfast Magistrates’ Court heard Raymond Boyd woke up in a bedroom at the weekend with blood pouring from his neck.
His former girlfriend, 39-year-old Elizabeth Hodgkinson, faces a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
She was granted bail but banned from going near the alleged victim’s home in the south of the city.
The court heard Mr Boyd and ms Hodgkinson had been in a bedroom at her home on Black Mountain Parade on Saturday.
According to defence solicitor Brian Archer, Mr Boyd woke up to discover what he at first thought was a nosebleed.
With a “large volume of blood” coming from the wound, Mr Archer said Hodgkinson phoned an ambulance and gave first aid.
Mr Boyd is understood to have since undergone surgery for wounds to his voice box area.
“My client denies she inflicted these injuries,” the solicitor stressed. “He hasn’t said he woke up and she stabbed him, he said he woke up and had a wound to his neck.”
No knife was found at the scene, the court heard.
Bail was opposed amid police concerns the accused may re-offend if released.
A detective constable also claimed Ms Hodgkinson could try to interfere with Mr Boyd.
Granting bail, District Judge Fiona Bagnall also imposed an alcohol ban and ordered the accused to report to police three times a week.
Ms Hodgkinson is due back in court on February 23rd.
