Mayo's holy mountain is to get a £250,000 "millennium park" at Murrisk, Westport, below Croagh Patrick. It will be developed as an area of "peace and reflection".
The National Millennium Committee has awarded £100,000 to Ballyhaunis for a "Mayo Millennium Spire" on St Patrick's Church, which was built without a spire in 1904.
Mr Seamus Brennan, who chairs the committee, has awarded £59,700 for the planting of 2,000 Irish oaks in the town of Balla. The planting will begin at midnight on January 1st.
Several other projects in Co Mayo have received funding under the millennium scheme, including the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar, Knock Area Development Association for a hedge labyrinth, Kilmovee/Urlaur Community Council, the Killala Christmas Lights Committee and the Cong Community Development Association.
Mr Brennan said £26 million of the £30 million budget had now been pledged to projects around the State.
