The Festival of World Cultures is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of music and theatre fans as it opens in Dún Laoghaire today.

The diverse three-day extravaganza will feature more than 150 events with artists from 80 countries around the globe.

Organisers believe more than 220,000 people will turn out over the 72 hours for the programme of music, street theatre, dance and club nights.

The international fiesta, now in its sixth year, will also feature markets, exhibitions, talks, workshops and activities for children.

This year includes an environmental awareness fair, an international food market, unique workshops, free outdoor music concerts, family events and late-night parties.
