A man has failed in a damages claim against AIB for slander.

Paul Donohue alleged he was slandered in phone calls that Finglas retail manager Gabrielle Grehan had made to himself and to another branch manager.

Mr Donohue, Lanesborough Grove, Finglas East, Dublin, claimed he was accused by Ms Grehan of bullying a bank official into giving him a €5,000 bank draft.

Mr Donohue told barrister Paul Fogarty, counsel for AIB, that Ms Grehan “loudly, aggressively and abusively” called him a bully boy on the phone and had told him he was not welcome in the branch as he was barred.

Ms Grehan denied having told Elizabeth Kelly, an official at Dublin City University branch of AIB, where Mr Donohue held his account, that he would also be barred from there as well as from Finglas.

Judge Matthew Deery, dismissing the claim, said the words used by Ms Grehan to Ms Kelly during the phone call were not excessive and that Mr Donohue had never inquired to the DCU branch as to whether he was barred there or not.
