Customs Service officers in Dundalk and Clones this morning raided an oil-laundering operation at Williamstown, Kilsaran, Co. Louth.
Over 70,000 litres of Northern Ireland agricultural diesel, in the process of being laundered, was discovered along with a compressor and trailer.
Almost 11,000 litres of waste product and 1,000 litres of sulphuric acid were also seized. It is estimated the plant had the capacity to launder about 40,000 litres of diesel per day, representing a potential loss of €600,000 in excise duty and VAT per annum.
One person is being questioned by Customs Officers. Louth County Council has been informed of the environmental hazard.
