North Dublin cyclists will soon have a continuous cycleway along the coastal route between Sutton and Fairview if plans from Dublin Corporation's director of traffic are given the green light. The proposals recommend the construction of a new section of cycleway between Bull Wall and St Anne's Park to link existing stretches of cycle path, in addition to another cycle facility between Alfie Byrne Road and the Fairview/Malahide Road junction.
The development of the Alfie Byrne Road to Fairview/Malahide junction section of the route will involve the construction of 1.7 km of segregated cycletrack along the eastern side of James Larkin Road and Clontarf Road. A shared footway and two-way cycletrack will be created by narrowing the carriageway.
The completed Coastal Cycle Route will later be linked with the proposed Malahide/Amiens Street Quality Bus Corridor and Cycle Route, the construction of which is due to start shortly. The completed route will in turn be linked with the proposed Howth Road Cycle Route.
The director of traffic, Mr Owen Keegan, says the existing cycle route will also be upgraded and cycle-parking facilities will be provided at the new Fairview DART station.
Welcoming the proposals, Mr Ivor Callely TD said it was important to make cycling "more attractive and safer". He said the completion of the Dollymount section of the cycle route would make people more inclined to cycle for recreational purposes and "encourage motor car commuters to switch to the bicycle".
