Nicosia - Greek and Turkish-Cypriot leaders expressed a desire yesterday to reduce tensions and create a better atmosphere in an effort to end the Mediterranean island's 23-year division, UN officials said.
"The two leaders are interested in working to help make the situation more encouraging," the UN special representative to Cyprus, Mr Gustav Feissel, said after the hour-long meeting.
President Glafcos Clerides and the Turkish-Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktash, also agreed to resume their discussions on humanitarian issues later this week. It was their first meeting in Nicosia since 1994 and will be followed up on Thursday, Mr Feissel said. - (AFP)
