The Dáil has passed a Government motion calling on Mr Liam Lawlor TD to cooperate fully with the Flood tribunal within the time-frame set out by the High Court or to resign his seat.

The motion was carried by 79 votes to 72. Mr Lawlor voted with the Government.

Earlier, in an address to the Dáil, Mr Lawlor rejected calls for him to resign his seat.

Mr Lawlor said it was up to the electorate to decide whether he should leave office.

He said: "It certainly was not the function of other members of the House" to force him to step down.

He described such a move as "cynical" and asked to be spared "the cant and hypocrisy".

Mr Lawlor was speaking in advance of a vote on a motion calling for him to cooperate fully with the Flood tribunal within a time-frame set out by the High Court and resign as a TD if he does not do so.

The result of the vote is expected at 8 p.m.

Mr Lawlor apologised to Justice Flood for the exchanges that occurred between them which he said were unhelpful to the chairman "in the difficult task he had to perform".

Quoting from his apology of December 14th to the tribunal he said: "All I can say chairman, is I apologise to the tribunal that they didn't discover what might be discoverable and I would certainly endeavour to discover whatever material I can to the tribunal and would be very pleased to forward it to you."

Mr Lawlor said all matters that he had ever had dealings with were "detailed as far as records allow".

He also defended decisions relating to the rezoning of Quarryvale and said they were "correct at the time and what was done should have been done".

He said recent media coverage had been "entirely unfair" to him.

He added: "personal abuse in the media is par for the course, bringing journalism to a new low." Mr Lawlor said Fine Gael's decisions on planning in Dublin should also be investigated but added he was not making an allegation in relation to this.
