Miami - A Miami jury has ordered the tobacco industry to pay more than $12.7 million in damages and opened to door to massive punitive awards.

The award covers compensatory damages, including medical expenses, for smokers in the state of Florida, but also opens the door to larger punitive damages. It is the first jury to rule in a class-action lawsuit against the tobacco industry.
