Former MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon has embarked on a media blitz to highlight a campaign to protect the Irish Constitution.
She will argue against the draft EU Constitution on the basis that it supersedes the traditional Irish version.
The move will fuel speculation the former Eurovision winner is considering contesting the Irish presidential election.
If so, she could present the only challenge to Mrs Mary McAleese, who is widely expected to seek a second seven-year term in office.
A source close to the singer said she felt very strongly about the Constitution and was eager to heighten the issue and inform the public of its implications.
"It would make running for president more tangible," he said. "The relevancy of the Constitution is important but we need to gauge whether the public cares enough about it.
"It's not about Dana running, it's about the Constitution and it's about the presidency. People have got to know what the issue is and the role of the president within that.
"If Mary McAleese does not stand up and state categorically that she will protect the Irish Constitution Dana may well feel she should do so herself," he added.
Ms Scallon has claimed that Ireland could be just weeks away from signing up to the new EU Constitution. She believes it is the President's duty to summon the Oireachtas and take action.
She would need the backing of four county councils to be nominated in a presidential election.
Ms Scallon unsuccessfully ran in the last presidential election in 1997 when Ms McAleese was elected.
